Hot Creek is astounding in the winter because snow covers the massive peaks that surround it, while the tiny valley remains warm, nurturing the life around it. My parents first took me here as a kid in the early 90s, and I remember many bathers were naked and a hippie/new age/au-natural vibe in the air. I remember catching pollywogs on the banks of the river and my dad's best friend's daughter losing her jelly sandal in the current. It's magnetic and it's special for many reasons. I've returned to this place 5 or 6 times throughout my life both alone and with different friends. When I went with my college girlfriend, a local minister performed a spontaneous blessing on us both — it was the sweetest, purest, truly Christian gesture. I returned soon after my first wife and I separated: bathing in the waters was truly cleansing for my mind and spirit.
